My concept for the 39 Steps was to focus on the Shadow Noir theming with color. For color, I focused on German Expressionist paintings for my color palette. Due tothe fast paced nature of the show, we needed some way to determine our locations. I used texture and atmospherics to aid with this. We also discussed using a painted drop to create instances of shadow play that I wanted to lean into. I wanted to use color and shadow to create comedic moments, while leaning into the spy thriller genre that this show is based on.

After selecting a few paintings that showed German expressionism, I pulled some of the main colors I found. Then I matched those colors with Gel colors to get the effect I wanted on stage.

These are the two textures I chose for this show. The first one denotes anytime we are in a city or a populated location, like the train. The second one denotes anytime we are in a natural location, mostly the moores.

These are the two other textures I used during the show. The first one I used to get that typical film noir look of the window blinds falling over someone's face. This was used for the Sheriff at the beginning of Act 1. The second one we used two of in a gobo rotator to look like a roaring fire in the fireplace during the hotel scenes.

This is my plot, edited to reflect the light's positions after the show was completed. This is also my first time creating a plot from scratch for a realized production, and I learned a lot from it. I learned what lights I like to use for side and top lights. I learned about how to focus lights to get the effect I want. I also learned how to work with a much bigger lighting system than any I'd worked with previously.
Focus Magic Sheets
These are the focus sheets I made myself to determine which lights were pointing at which sections of the stage. This helped focus go much faster once I settled into a rhythm. It also allowed me to take notes during focus to come back to later.

This is a copy of the magic sheet I created on the EOS software to help me while I cued. I decided to color the back squares of my warm and cold lights and my texture lights to help me remember what each looked like at a glance.
