Unrealized Work

She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen

She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

My Design:

This was my first time doing a sound design for a show. I leaned heavily into the DnD aspect of the show, creating soundscapes to match each location, whether in the real world or the DnD world. I wanted it to feel real to the audience, regardless of which location we were in.

Sound Effects

Monster Footsteps

Monster Roar

Monster Growling

Sword in Flesh

Explosion

Here are some of the sound effects I chose for the show to add to that feeling of being in the DnD world.

Pre-show Ideas

This was my pre-show idea for music. I wanted the audience to feel like they'd just walked into a tavern and were at the beginning of their journey, like a typical DnD party. All credit to the original creator of the song.

Post-show Ideas

This was my post-show idea for music. I wanted the audience to feel like the battle was over and they'd won. All credit to the original creator of the songs.

The Woman in Black by Stephen Mallatratt

The framework of this spine tingler is unusual: a lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a specter who haunts the neighborhood where her illegitimate child was accidentally killed. Anyone who sees her dies! The lawyer has invited some friends to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre.

My Design:

This was my second time doing a sound design for a show. I wanted to immerse the audience in the world of the show by building soundscapes and creating my own sounds through Foley work. This was done primarily because the set is so sparse that we need sound to build the world of the show. The initial concept changed quite a bit through the process, as I was challenged not to let the audience react and not to draw attention to The Woman in Black.

Foley Sound Effects

Whistle

Ticking Clock

Door Knocking

Horse Hooves

Footsteps

Rocking Chair 1

Rocking Chair 2

Rocking Chair 3

Here are some of the sound effects I designed for this show through Foley work.

Pre-show Ideas

This was my pre-show idea for music. I wanted the audience to feel unsettled the minute they walk into the theatre. All credit to the original creator.

Post-show Ideas

There was no post-show for this concept because I wanted the audience to feel unsettled as they left the theatre
